Droitwich hit by the shops

12:00pm Thursday 26th January 2012

PAUL Smith says the supermarkets are becoming a problem for Droitwich RFC ahead of their clash with the league leaders.

Droitwich host Midlands Two West (South) Barkers Butts on Saturday (kick-off 2.15pm) but could have a number of key players unavailable because they work shifts in local stores.A win would keep sixth-placed Droitwich’s title hopes alive but Smith admits he does not know which players he will be able to call on.

He said: “We are struggling a bit with commitment at the moment.“Quite a few of our lads work in supermarkets and it means they aren’t available every Saturday.“It’s all a bit different from my day. I’m a bit annoyed about it but I suppose work comes first.“I’m confident we will be able to put a strong team out but it won’t be as strong as we would like.”Veteran flanker James Davis could be poised to return to the line-up after building his fitness in the seconds. The Spa side ran the visitors close on their own patch back in October before eventually succumbing to a 27-23 defeat and Smith is hopeful they can go one better this time.He said: “If we can keep our discipline then I think we have a chance.“Our pitch is a lot wider than theirs and it will suit running rugby.“But a lot of it will depend on who we have available.”
